Introduction to my Portfolio

The individual pieces of my portfolio go together and build on each other in several ways. The “story of self” reaches my audience on a personal level— if a Californian surfer has become an activist for social justice in war zones, then the reader can probably do the same. The issue explainer fits with the overall theme of the portfolio because it highlights one of the many injustices that are rampant in war zones— human trafficking. My final call-to-action is important because it challenges the reader to actually act upon the issue of warzone injustice.

This portfolio frames me as a “regular” guy who is pursuing an “irregular” type of activism. I use this frame intentionally so that my audience can see that anybody— regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic boundaries— can work to provide justice in the world’s most desolate and destructive conflict areas. Of course, there is still much for me to do in terms of defining myself as a civically-engaged person. I’m only 21 years old and as a college student, I haven’t yet had many opportunities to actually act upon my passion. I want to “walk the walk” and not simply “talk the talk"; this is why one of my post-graduation goals is physically travel to refugee camps in North Africa and gain more first-hand experience with humanitarian initiatives affecting conflict refugees. I am very excited to get more involved with this form of civic engagement!

Thank you for taking your time to read through my portfolio.

Respectfully,

- Nik Frey
